About
OpenSeas Program
Maritime transportation is a significant contributor to global emissions, releasing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Shipping accounts for about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, primarily from burning fossil fuels such as diesel and heavy fuel oil, as well as the release of methane from cargo and waste.
To reduce the impact of shipping on the environment, the European Union and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) have made efforts through their MARPOL Convention. However, more needs to be done to develop cleaner and more efficient ships and to implement regulations that limit emissions – and there is still time to make progress in this field.
OpenSeas is one of the sub-programs of ResorsusGreen tailored for mitigating greenhouse gases in the maritime industry.
What is OpenSeas
RESORSUS provides clearly defined guidelines for when a vessel/voyage/any marine service can be called “carbon neutral” by designing tailored plans.
Expected Results
-
RESORSUS will help prepare companies for the transition to a low-carbon economy before the implementation of EU ETS II in the maritime industry.
-
Programs will increase awareness among organizations about carbon economy management and reducing carbon emissions.
-
As vessels sail across vast horizons, RESORSUS will help them contribute to society and the environment in accordance with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
